Merivale Action Centre
Merivale Primary School situated 5km from downtown Tauranga City has a roll of 200 and one of the most diverse ethnic rolls in the country with Maori, Pakeha, Samoan, Indian, Vietnamese, Tongan, Fijian and Chinese all being represented there. What it didn’t have was a school hall!  Along with some hard-slog fundraising by the local community, and the generosity of private donors, TECT’s contribution of $225,000 helped to progress the much anticipated Merivale Action Centre which is situated on the School’s grounds. The Centr
e features a full-size basketball court, four badminton courts, volleyball court, service area with kitchen, changing rooms, an office for management, and seating for 200 people. Pupils can now enjoy school assemblies in the comfort of the new hall, stage school performances, and participate in numerous activities.
In brand partnership with the local Councils, TECT has sponsored the “Action Centre” brand package since 1999. This multi-purpose facility is the area’s newest recreational and community centre - adding to TECT’s other Action Centre brands including the Mount Action Centre, Otumoetai Action Centre and Katikati Action Centre.
Merivale School Councillors, Anne Beetham, Paris Rameka and Hineporete Rangitawa (pictured) think the new Action Centre is pretty cool too!

Omanu Beach Surf Lifesaving Club
The membership and lifeguard operations of Omanu Beach Surf Lifesaving Club has been greatly impacted with more and more beach goers using the long Omanu coastline as their preferred sunning, swimming and surfing spot. Apart from the occasional repaint and ongoing maintenance, the Clubhouse had been the same for forty years. A grant of $200,000 from TECT to upgrade and remodel the Clubhouse has enhanced its function as a community amenity. The completed Clubhouse now provides three new operational areas: the TECT lounge; a large multi-purpose area with accommodation; rescue base patrol tower and first aid room. The rescue patrol tower will dramatically diminish the response time during rescues and help in the day-to-day deployment of personnel and resources. The Clubhouse also provides for the ballooning Junior Surf membership and will attract and retain experienced lifeguards.  The revamped Clubhouse was launched in March 2006.

Waipuna Hospice Celebrates Upgrade
The Waipuna Hospice is a voluntary organisation which provides palliative care services and support to patients and families coping with terminal illness.  Since the $3 million upgrade to the facility in 2006, the general population growth in the region and the increased ageing population have placed greater demand upon hospice services.

With an expanding nursing team, it was evident that significant ambient noise from the nurses talking to patients and families by phone was impacting on the ability of the nursing team to communicate to a patient population that is largely elderly with significant hearing difficulties.  These factors necessitated the redesign of the community nursing office.  The Hospice applied to TECT for funding towards the redevelopment of the community nursing stations and laundry additions.  TECT’s $53,400 to the Waipuna Hospice is another way the Trust has demonstrated its commitment to helping the community in a positive way.

The redevelopment has greatly enhanced the systems and working environment for Waipuna Hospice staff.  It has also increased the ability of Waipuna Hospice to care for more patients.  Last year over 600 patients were cared for by Waipuna Hospice with over 10,880 nurse visits to patients in the community.

[TECT also contributed $500,000 towards the upgrade of the facility in 2006]

New Courts for Te Puke Tennis Club
This exciting project presents a wonderful venue for tennis in Te Puke and surrounding areas.  The 8-court facility allows for interschool, interclub, regional and even national tennis competitions 12 months of the year.  The vision is to provide a quality facility that has multiple uses, will serve the community for the next 50-100 years and allow Te Puke to be a central venue for tennis in the Bay.  A tennis club that operates for 12 months of the year utilising a cushioned surface is a concept replicated all over New Zealand – it was Te Puke’s turn and TECT was pleased to be able to assist with funding of $250,000 to make this project a reality.
The provision of purpose-built courts and first class lighting means that the Club can also cater for a greater range of sporting codes.  In considering the application, Trustees agreed that with a rapidly growing population, the need to continue to provide recreational facilities, and to promote health and fitness of the community is essential.
