COMMUNITY ORGANISATION SUBSIDY SCHEME $10,000

Te Puna Hauora ki Tauranga Moana is a Kaupapa Maori Mental Health Trust providing specific mental health services for children, adolescents and adults, as well as dual diagnosis services for those living with mental illness and addiction.  Each of the eight clinical staff, which is made up of nurses, social workers, therapists, quality control and administration, manage eighteen to twenty cases at any one time on a three to six month turnaround.

General Manager Cindy Mokomoko says “When we were based at the hospital, I had a feeling that we weren’t reaching some pockets of our community. Since we’ve been here in 15th Ave that’s proved to be true. I think people see us as more accessible here – we’re quite literally only a few steps off the main street.”

Ms Mokomoko says they did have some concerns when they moved premises about how they would get the money to set up. “We put the cabling in ourselves” she said “but after that we still had to find funds to purchase the computers and software. When we heard about the TECT funding we went right ahead and applied.”

To everyone’s delight TECT approved a $10,000 grant and the new premises have now been set up with seven computer workstations and a server, an electronic shredding machine, a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner.
