Youth Driver Navigation Programme
In 2017 New Zealand Blue Light launched a 3-year pilot of the Blue Light Youth Driver Navigator (BLYDN) Programme in the Bay of Plenty region funded in partnership by BayTrust, TECT and Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust.
BLYDN is designed to help support young people to get their full drivers licence and especially designed for those young people who may not have access to the right support to do so. e.g. Lack of funds, a suitable vehicle or someone to teach them to drive.
The programme enables local communities to assist learner and restricted drivers to successfully navigate through the driver licencing system right through to full licence, removing any barriers that may have prevented them from achieving this in the past.
After just one year thanks to the support of our community partners, staff and volunteers the demand for this programme has grown beyond our anticipation and we now have more than one hundred 16 to 20 year olds on their way to being full NZ Drivers Licence holders.
One of the biggest barriers to growth are community volunteers to mentor our young drivers. If you are interested in assisting us to have more safer young drivers on our roads please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to register.
