A Decade of Strategic Investment: TECT Community Trust’s Diversified Portfolio Turns Ten

Tauranga based TECT Community Trust is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its diversified investment portfolio, a strategy that has delivered strong returns while securing the Trust’s ability to support the Tauranga / Western Bay of Plenty community for generations to come.

The portfolio was established in 2015 following an initial, partial sell-down of Trustpower shares, then the Trust’s sole asset. Over the past decade, TECT has successfully navigated several liquidity events and built a robust, diversified portfolio that has generated annualised returns of 11.5%, comparing favourably to the New Zealand Super Fund’s 11.26% over the same period.

Dr. Ed Schuck, Independent Chair of TECT’s Investment Committee, said:

“TECT has consistently focused on growth assets to maximise long-term returns. Moreover, as a perpetual investor, the Trust is a natural holder of private investments. The results speak for themselves – disciplined governance and a commitment to growth have delivered outcomes that rival national benchmarks.”

This forward-looking approach has enabled the Trust to capture opportunities across global and private markets while maintaining disciplined risk management. The result is a portfolio that not only withstands market volatility but also delivers sustainable growth to fund community initiatives well into the future.

Wayne Werder, CEO of TECT Community Trust, added:

“Diversification was a bold step 10 years ago, and it has proven to be the right choice. By focusing on growth assets and maintaining a long-term view, we’ve delivered strong returns that enable us to keep making a real difference in our region. Looking ahead, TECT will continue to manage its portfolio prudently, guided by a long-term perspective, to deliver enduring benefits for the community.”

Today, TECT’s total portfolio is valued at approximately $1.1 billion, comprising the diversified portfolio (around 80%) and 17.6 million Infratil shares, the remaining legacy asset.
