The Western Bay Community Awards celebrate the amazing work of local groups and volunteers across Tauranga and the Western Bay. They are a chance to acknowledge the incredible community work that helps make this region one of the greatest places to live. 

The Awards are delivered in partnership by TECT, Acorn Foundation, BayTrust, Tauranga City Council, and Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

Nominations open 31 August 2026 

Who is eligible to be nominated?

Any not-for-profit organisation or volunteers in the Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty can be nominated for the Western Bay Community Awards. 

Groups do not have to have received funding from any of the funders to be nominated. The Awards are based on activities undertaken in the previous 12 months (1 September 2025 - 31 August 2026).

Who can put forward a nomination?

Anyone can make a nomination in any of the award categories. Nominators do not need to be directly associated with the nominee, but we do ask that you inform them you have nominated them.

What are the award categories?

The Western Bay Community Awards are divided into seven categories. 

  • Community Event Award which recognises a community-led event that not only excelled in its planning and delivery, but also made a positive impact on the community by creating memorable experiences and strengthening communal ties. 

  • Sustainable Future Award recognises those who have implemented innovative projects or practices that protect and enhance the environment or who have embedded sustainability into the core of their operations. It celebrates forward-thinking initiatives that address climate challenges and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for all. 

  • Diversity and Inclusion Award celebrates efforts local efforts that break down barriers, create opportunities for all, and cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. It recognises a commitment to embracing differences and building a more inclusive, equitable community for everyone. 

  • Heart of the Community Award recognises those who have made an extraordinary impact through selfless dedication and unwavering commitment, embodying the true spirit of community by uplifting others and fostering a sense of togetherness that resonates throughout the community. 

  • Youth Spirit Award is for the local inspiring individuals under 25 years of age who exemplify the essence of community spirit through their contributions and dedication. A young person who actively engages in their community, makes a positive difference, and serves as a role model for their peers. Their passion, leadership, and commitment to helping others reflect the vibrant potential of our future leaders. 

  • Volunteer of the Year Award is for the exceptional individuals whose dedication and selfless contributions have made a profound impact on the community. A volunteer who has gone above and beyond in their service, demonstrating unwavering commitment, passion, and generosity in their efforts to uplift and support others. Their outstanding contributions embody the true spirit of volunteerism and community service. 

  • Best Collaboration Award recognises community organisations and/or individuals who have joined forces to achieve a common goal, creating a positive change or trying  a new initiative. Whether through a joint project innovative partnership or collective initiatives this award celebrates the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change and creating lasting impact. 

A People's Choice Award will open in February for the general public to vote on their favourite finalist. 

A Lifetime Service Award winner will also be announced on the awards evening.

What if I put my nomination into the wrong category?

If, in the view of the judges, an entry meets the criteria for consideration under another category that is better suited, or has clearly been placed into the wrong category at the first instance by mistake, the judges reserve the right to transfer the entry to another category. 

How are the nominees judged?

A panel made up of community representatives judge the final list of nominees. The key criteria considered by the judges when selecting finalists and winners are:

  • Impact on community - Benefit of service/project on the wider community.

  • Innovation and creativity - Utilises innovative ideas and new approaches.

  • Effectiveness of activities - Success of service, achievement or objectives.

  • Use of resources - Cost effectiveness, sustainability, and volunteering involvement and commitment.

  • Collaboration – Evidence of collaboration and partnerships.

What are the key dates?

  • Nomination period is open Monday 31 August to Friday 9 October 2026

  • Judging takes place in early November 2026

  • Finalists are contacted and announced in early November 2026

  • Filming of finalists takes place throughout late November to early December 2026

  • Online showcase of finalists runs from early January 2027

  • People's Choice Award voting period is open 15 February to 5 March 2027

  • 2027 Western Bay Community Awards night is Thursday 18 March 2027 at Holy Trinity Tauranga

Can anyone attend the awards ceremony?

Yes, anyone can attend the Western Bay Community Awards Ceremony to support the named finalists and celebrate the amazing work of local groups and volunteers across the region. The awards are a free event to attend, and free tickets will be available closer to the awards night and be linked here once available.
